No more space in your wardrobe? Is your wardrobe filled with clothes you no longer wear? It may be time to do some decluttering and say goodbye to some of your clothes. Decluttering can be challenging, but it can also be rewarding. Here are seven tips on how to declutter your wardrobe.

  1. Make Things Visible: Take Everything Out of Your Wardrobe

Your wardrobe may be filled with too many clothes to the point where it’s hard for you to find specific shirts, dresses, or jeans. You know it’s in there, but you just have a hard time locating it. For you to be able to see all your clothes and assess them one by one, take everything out of your wardrobe.

This is a good way to start decluttering, as you can quickly sort through your clothing and have an idea of which ones to keep or give away. With all your clothes out in your wardrobe, you can also take this time to do some cleaning. Wipe down walls, shelves, and hanging rods.

  1. Decide Which Clothes to Keep, Donate, Sell, or Throw Away

You can have too many clothes in your wardrobe, and these could even be clothes you no longer wear. So, you should assess what stays and what goes. When deciding what to keep or give away, you can create piles. Have separate piles for clothes to keep, donate, sell, or throw away.

  • What to Keep

Remember, don’t keep all your clothes. Get rid of some of them. Only keep clothes that you still truly need. These are clothes that you use on a regular basis. Keep clothes that still fit or clothes that you are comfortable wearing. You can also keep dresses that will be used for future events. When assessing what to keep, you can try clothes on. If you still feel great in them, then keep them.

  • What to Give or Donate

You should let go of clothes that no longer fit or clothes you won’t ever wear again. If these clothes are still in good condition and you’re no longer interested in wearing them again, it is better to donate them to charity.

Additionally, you can also give clothes to friends or relatives. You may no longer like these clothes, but other people will. So, give away clothes you no longer use. You can also save up space in your wardrobe.

  • What to Sell

Maybe you have clothes that still have their price tags. You may also have clothes you have only worn once. Instead of donating these clothes, you can choose to sell them instead. You will be earning money and have more space in your wardrobe.

  • What to Discard or Throw Away

If you have clothes that are no longer in good condition, you should discard them or throw them away. Clothes that have holes or rips, and are worn out or beyond repair cannot be donated or sold. So, throw away these clothes.

  1. Have a “Maybe” Pile, but Don’t Dwell Too Much

You may have clothes you are undecided about. You’re still thinking about whether to keep or give them away. You may be thinking, “Maybe I’m still going to wear this.” While sorting out your clothes, you can also create a “maybe” pile, and there is nothing wrong with doing so. Begin organizing and cleaning your wardrobe, and then revisit your “maybe” pile later.

But you should remember that the “maybe” pile is only temporary. Don’t dwell on these clothes too much. Eventually, you have to make a decision. But if ever it really is difficult to do so, or if you really cannot decide yet, you can rent a storage unit, and store clothes in the “maybe” pile there. When you have already come up with a decision, visit your storage unit and get your clothes.

  1. Group Your Clothes into Different Categories

Categorizing can help in keeping things organized. When putting your clothes back in your wardrobe, don’t just put them back randomly. This will create a lot of mess in the future, as you will have to go through many clothes just to look for that specific blouse or skirt.

There are many ways to categorize your clothes. It can be either by type, by color, or by frequency of use. The important thing is to group similar items together so that you won’t have difficulty locating clothes.

For instance, you can hang dresses of the same colour beside each other or place blouses on the right and jeans on the left. It is better to put everything back in an organized way to prevent a messy wardrobe.

  1. Try the Reverse Hanger Trick

We tend to store clothes we don’t wear or we don’t often use. The reverse hanger trick will help you filter clothes and avoid clutter in the future. To do this, hang your clothes and put all the hangers backwards so that the open end of each hanger faces you. The hangers should be facing in the wrong direction.

Whenever you wear something and put it back in your wardrobe, make sure that the hanger is in the right direction, with the open end facing away from you. This way, you will be able to see which clothes you often wear and which ones you haven’t worn. Over time, you can see what you actually never really wear, and you could sell or give these clothes away.

  1. Avoid Hoarding Clothes: Declutter Regularly

Avoid hoarding clothes and get into the habit of decluttering regularly. You can commit to a weekly sweep, evaluate your clothes, and see which ones you can let go of. Determine which clothes are sentimental and which ones you can say goodbye to. Don’t let your wardrobe get crammed with clothes you never wear.

  1. Store Seasonal and Occasion Wear Separately: Rent a Storage Unit

Seasonal clothing and occasion wear are clothes you don’t use often, so it is better to store them separately. They can take up too much space in your wardrobe, and you won’t even be using them regularly. To keep your seasonal clothing and special occasion attire safe, you can store them in a storage unit.
